Portraits can be as formal or as informal as you like. When taking pictures I try to get my subjects to relax by talking to them and hopefully distracting them. I never want to make anyone stand or act in an uncomfortable way, although sometimes it pays off to try to include their characters in the shot if I can, whether they are mischievous, funny or conservative.
